AI Fundamentals — Companion Textbook

This book is a plain-language companion for the AI Fundamentals track. It assumes no maths and no code. Its job is to make the ideas stick: explain each concept from first principles, show a worked example, and give you a way to check whether you actually understood it.
What "fundamentals" means
Fundamentals are the essential principles, concepts, and basic skills that form the foundation of a subject, system, or practice.
AI Fundamentals, then, is the groundwork: what artificial intelligence is, how it works in broad strokes, why it behaves the way it does, and how the pieces of the landscape fit together — enough to reason about AI, not just use it.
Why the book begins with humans
To understand artificial intelligence, you first need a clear point of comparison: human beings. Before this book explains what AI is, it begins with what makes a person a person — because human beings and human intelligence are the baseline against which AI is understood.
Part 1 builds that baseline. Part 2 uses it to explain AI.
How this book is structured
Each chapter follows the same shape:
- The plain explanation — the idea from first principles, in everyday words.
- A worked example — one concrete case, reasoned through step by step.
- Now explain it back — a prompt to teach the idea to someone else. Where you get stuck is what to re-read.
- Self-check — a few questions with collapsible answers.
- Key terms — short definitions you can return to.
Where this sits in the path
AI Fundamentals → AI Associate → AI Developer → AI Architect
Fundamentals is where you understand AI. The later books are about applying it to professional work, building AI-enabled applications, and designing production systems.
