Chapter 1 — The Human Question

After this chapter you can explain, in your own words, why understanding AI starts with understanding human intelligence, and describe the basic cycle that human intelligence runs through.

Why begin with humans?

To understand artificial intelligence, you first need a clear point of comparison: human beings. Before this book explains what AI is, it starts with what makes a person a person — because human beings and human intelligence are the baseline against which AI is measured, described, and marketed.

When people say an AI system is "smart", "creative", or "reasoning", every one of those words is borrowed from humans. If you do not have a clear picture of what those words mean for a person, you cannot tell whether they are being used accurately for a machine.

Being human involves a set of capacities that are easy to take for granted:

  • Lived experience — a history of moments that shapes how you see the world.
  • Needs and motivations — reasons for acting that come from within, not from a prompt.
  • Emotion and relationships — feelings that connect you to other people and shape decisions.
  • Values and ethical judgement — a sense of right and wrong you can reason about and defend.
  • Imagination and purpose — the ability to picture what does not exist yet and work toward it.
  • Responsibility for decisions and outcomes — being answerable for what you choose to do.
  • The ability to create tools and institutions — including AI itself.

At the centre of most of these is human intelligence.

What is human intelligence?

Definition

Human intelligence is the natural human capacity to perceive, learn, reason, feel, imagine, make decisions, solve problems, and adapt through experience.

Human intelligence is not one isolated ability. It emerges from many connected parts of being human: biology, perception, memory, emotions, needs, experiences, relationships, values, and the ability to reflect on our own actions.

In simple terms, it lets us move through a continuous cycle:

Perceive → Interpret → Remember → Reason → Decide → Act → Learn

We take in information from the world, interpret what it means, connect it with what we already know, consider possible actions, make a choice, act, and learn from what happens next. Then the cycle runs again, slightly changed by what we just learned.

Intelligence is also collective

Human intelligence does not operate only inside one head. Through communication and cooperation, people share knowledge, coordinate action, and build things no individual could create alone:

Relationships → Communities → Cultures → Organisations → Institutions → Knowledge → Tools

And among the tools humans have created is artificial intelligence. AI does not appear at the beginning of this story. It appears much later.

Humans came first. Natural intelligence came first. Artificial intelligence is something humans created.

That is why this book begins with natural human intelligence: to understand AI clearly, we first need to understand the intelligence it is designed to reproduce, extend, or support — and, just as importantly, what stays distinctly human.

A worked example

Trace the cycle through one ordinary decision: you are driving and the traffic light ahead turns amber.

LearnNothing went wrong, which slightly reinforces that judgement for next time. Had a pedestrian stepped out, the lesson — and the next decision — would be different.

Notice how much of this leans on things that are not in the amber light itself: your memory, your past experiences, your sense of risk, your responsibility for the outcome. The perception is the easy part. The rest is where human intelligence does its work.
